We were enjoying a quite family time watching the old photographs and cozing up. My now not so baby.. Baby suddenly has a huge doubt, Mom, if I was so small.. What did you feed me?
How could food be tasty if goo?… The question trail followed. I started thinking of the avocado mash days.This also reminded me of a question on my proud blog from one of the readers to provide baby food ideas.
Just with the idea of killing two idea with one stone, we got up and decided, let’s retry baby food today. Of course, even without the high baby chairs and soft spoons it was a fun evening
To be a babies first set of foods I prefer avocados and banana. This should depend on the availability of good avocados and the age of the baby. If possible , put the baby on exclusive breast feed for up-to 6 months. Now there is no better judge than the mothers instinct, yet as a new mother I used to find this quote challenging too. Of so consult your pediatrician and assess the growth and other requirements to help you decide when to start on solids.
Back to the avocados, avocados are a smooth pulp fruit, with a texture soft for the baby. Being neutral in flavour they like the flavour too. Avocado being rich in potassium, vitamins and healthy fats is a perfect start to baby nutrition.

For 6-9months
Prep the avocado as discussed below. The pulp needs to be blend to a smooth paste. To this smooth paste add breast milk or formula to thin it out. Make sure there are no lumps.

9months onwards
Once the baby is able to swallow better use a fork and mash the avocado till it has a few tiny bits.
Toddlers still go on with the bond to avocado. Now the pulp can be cut into strips to hold and chew on or added to smoothies.

Now it’s even more easy.. You may soon add it up on toast, try out a bit of guacamole, chill the mashed pulp and serve as ice-cream or smoothies.
And the bond with avocados goes on….

To choose an avocado
Try and look for local organic growers who supply a good quality. Once the stalk comes off easily the fruit is ready to eat. A not so perfectly ripe one will be grainy in texture when mashed. This may not be suitable for babies. So place the avocado if it is firm in a paper bag and allow it to ripen. Check the fruit daily.

  • 2 nos avocado


  • Once avacado is ripe wash and slice the avocado into two.
  • Remove the big central seed.
  • Scoop out the pulp using a spoon.
  • One avocado is quite a huge portion for a baby.. So mash the pulp, place on an ice tray to form frozen cubes Wrap the tray well and freeze.
  • After 4-6 hours of freezing, store the formed cubes in a freezer safe baby approved pouch in the freezer.


Two avocados provide approximately one cup of mash.
For a beginning baby can have upto one tsp. Keep increasing as the baby accepts better and age increases.
