Hawker finds, Penang

I was drawn to the baking stalls by the smell of baked cookies. Following my nose I found this bakery stalls in the midst of the hawkers selling a lot of tiny cookies which looked a lot like buns with a brown chocolate like oozing around them.
Then gearing up all the malay I learnt in the few days I decided to strike a conversation to find out what it was, what it was before trying them
The shopkeeper assured me that the filling was nothing but ‘gula melaka’ or palm sugar.  He offered me one to try..
It was a flaky crumbly crust with a sticky sweet filling….yum yummy
I quickly gobbled down that one and reached out to one more flavour…
I didn’t quite understand what he meant but from the flavours I got it that it was peanuts, palm sugar and salt….
I was happy to find a pit stop to my wet market trips…
I grabbed a couple of bags of each.
Came home and drowned a few more cookies with a great big glass of ‘lima ice'[ iced limeade].
Penangites make good cookies ……savour some to decide
