Few months into this routine, my tastebuds start murmuring that this is the most boring way to have an apple. Infact, the idea of apple itself gets pretty boring and the same apple starts sitting on the desk for days together. Over the years, I have figured out I eat that fruit better as nachos, salad or a chaat, than just that apple. Nothing wrong with a regular apple, it is just that they are the most available fruit that sets in monotony mode.
Since we have already shown you the absolutely cool, no cook apple nachos, enjoy this variation – apple chaat.
What is apple chaat?
Apple chaat is a twist on the classic fruit chaat purely driven by the fact that apples are the number one fruit you encounter in a western market. It is a slightly sweet, tangy, crunchy and fresh idea that is better than a salad. It ticks the following boxes.
- Vegan
- Gluten free
- Nut free
- Lunchbox friendly
Ingredients to make this apple chaat
Apples:crisp sweet apples are delicious in this chaat. You can use Fuji, Red, Gala or honey crisp based on what is available.
Cucumbers: I have used Lebanese cucumbers that I get easily. You can choose any variety or omit the cucumbers all together.
Tamarind chutney: the tangy sweet imili ki chutney we have used is a made at home batch – here is the recipe link. However, you can use a store bought one. These are easily available in the Indian grocery stores.
Chaat masala: the salty, spicy element that makes a chaat come alive is the chaat masala. The combination of black salt, dried mint and other aromatics step up this apple chaat flavours. Use a made at home batch (click here for recipe link). You can you store bought varieties like Shaan or Everest too.
Lemon: lemon not only help the flavours mingle but also save the apples from going brown. The combination of chaat masala and lemon is classic for any chaat recipe. Preferably use fresh lemon juice as it is vibrant. You can add lime too if you like, I do find this a bit sharp for the soft sweet flavours of apple.
Crispy bits: chaat is oftens served with a bit of crispy on top. This adds to the texture and crunch. You can add sev, papadi or moong dal namkeen to this recipe. Today I have chosen a bit of moong dal that I have at hand.
